Jammin's Overnight DJ

Mike Binkley

MB is the overnight jock on Jammin 99.  To say that MB is "old school" is an understatement.  He buys his clothes at the store "70s R Us", he required us to install a reel to reel, cart machines, and turntables in the studio, he brings in his record collection every night, and he still thinks it's impressive to promote the fact that we are an "FM Stereo" station.

An interview with MB:

Interviewer:  "MB, what was the happiest moment of your life?"

MB:  "When Luke Perry made sideburns fashionable again."

Interviewer:  "How long have you been in radio?"

MB:  "For over 30 years now.  I started at 16.  I went straight from the paper route to the studio.  I've been doing the overnight shift ever since.  The only time I ever left radio was when I took an executive position as the assistant night manager at a local fast food restaurant.  I did that for about six months and then got that "radio itch" again."

Interviewer:  "What are your proudest achievements?"

MB:  "Well the first ones that come to my mind are the fact that I can still wear some of my slacks from the late 70s and that my 77 lime green Pinto is still running.  I drove it in tonight as a matter of fact.  Believe it or not, the eight track still works."

Interviewer:  ""What would you say are your biggest challenges?"

MB:  "Well.....I'm still having a hard time with all this new technology like the cd player and the fax machine.  I've been at this station for five years now and still can't find a single typewriter in the place."

Interviewer:  "What do you like to do in your spare time?"

MB:  "I still like to tinker with my CB radio but those things are just a lot more quiet now.  I'm taking a night course in Morse code at the community college.  I feel like that'll make a comeback in the ham radio world someday.   But my favorite "off time" thing to do is just kick back on the old waterbed with some old Mad magazines."

Interviewer:  "The word around here is that you are quite the decorator."

MB:  "I guess if you asked me if I had any decorating tips for other bachelors, it would be to get a black velour sofa, a couple of lava lamps, a pleather recliner, maybe a spider lamp, a blacklight or two, dogs playing poker, and satin sheets for the waterbed.  It's a look I happen to like."

Interviewer:  "Any parting comments?"

MB:  "I'd just like everybody to listen to the music I play on Jammin 99 during the overnight hours.   Management tells me they're gonna let me open the mic soon."
